Palm Sunday (aka Passion Sunday) commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, celebrated by the distribution of palm branches (or the branches of other native trees representing the palm branches) the crowd scattered in front of Christ as he rode into Jerusalem.
First known as Pasha, Palm Sunday originated in the Jerusalem Church around the late third or early fourth century. Ceremonies consisted of hymns, prayers, and sermons as people moved through holy sites within Jerusalem. At the last site, the place of Jesus’ ascension into heaven, clergy would read the biblical account of Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. As evening approached, the people would return to the city reciting: "Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord" (Matthew 21:9, John 12:13). By the fifth century, the celebration had spread as far as Constantinople. It wasn't until the sixth century that the ritual blessing of the palms was added. A morning procession replaced the evening one, and by the eighth century, the Western Church was celebrating "Dominica in Palmis", or "Palm Sunday."
