The Karni Mata Temple in Rajasthan, India - devoted to rat worship

The Karni Mata Temple in Rajasthan, India is one of India’s temples devoted to rat worship. Rats are believed to be the sacred incarnation of the Hindu goddess Shri Karniji. This large congregation of rats, or kabas, is fed on gifts of food and buffalo milk. Devotees present offerings of sweetmeats and coconuts to the head priest in exchange for a blessing and the application of kum kum, an orange dot on the forehead - the ancient symbol of the third eye. An old Hindu tradition required any person who stepped on a rat (and killed it) to give the rat's weight in gold and silver to the temple, or endure bad karma forever. Recent practice though relates to sales of small silver rats to cover such an incident.
